I've run into my share of old wives tales still believed today. For example that breast feeding will cause you not to get pregnant or that thumb sucking causes crooked teath. What are some you have seen or heard recently?

ok i've heared of the thumb sucking one and that's so funny that it's traveled that far. Have you heared of the one that if you itch your noise your going to kiss a fool, or the sneeze three times and your getting money? I've done both and both have come true. If i sneeze three times a few days later i've got money. It's cool. The other one is the lines on the palm of your left hand start itching then itch it on real wood products. This is soposted to bring you money i guess (don't know how true that one is). Um if you brake a morror or walk under a ladder or open up an umbrella in doors or have a black cat walk acrossed your path then it means seven years bad luck.

Oh I know, it amazes me that people still believe that one. Yeah I've had the itchy nose means you'll kiss a fool. Now I was told sneeze three times and you can make a wish and it will come true. With the palm I've heard it depends on which palm. If it's the left you will get money but if it's the right it means you will meet someone.

Sorry, thumb sucking does do harm. It affects the formation of the upper and lower jaw in childhood and causes the 2 front adult teeth to extend outward more than normal (buck teeth). This is taught in all medical and dental schools.

Actually no it will not cause bucked teeth. I suggest you recheck on that one. I've checked with many orthodontists and yes it can cause the open bite as discussed below but it does not cause bucked or crooked teeth. You can even check on line, Yahoo answers, ADA all say it won't cause bucked or crooked teeth.

My nan was full of old wives tales. Never put new shoes on the table, it will bring you bad luck. If your ears are burning someone is talking about you. Pulling out a grey hair will make ten grow in its place. If you spill salt you have to take some and throw it over your left shoulder and it will go into the eye of the devil. If you break a mirror you will have 7 years bad luck. Opening an umbrella indoors brings bad luck. An apple a day keeps the doctor away! The list is endless. I am glad i never took what my nan said to heart, otherwise I would be a nervous wreck!!

Amazing how they are still sending out the same things huh? I hear my niece's friends their parents tell them similar. Now I will admit if I spill salt I throw it over my shoulder. I know it's superstition but figure it can't hurt. Actually the apple a day actually had good cause. It went back to when most didn't get the right vitamins and to keep scurvy away. Apples or citrus fruit was best for this. So that one at least has some reasoning behind it.

Like I said, will create OPEN BITE. An open bite often results from thumbsucking or prolonged use of a pacifier. The best cure for open bite is to prevent it in the first place by eliminating thumbsucking and the use of pacifiers as early as possible for your child. Untreated, open bite can lead to facial malformation, abnormal speech patterns and significant orthodontic complications. I am 100% sure. Talk to pediatric dentist. You can also check it on line.

Thumb sucking won't cause crooked teeth. Check with an orthodontist, they will tell you it's an old myth and not really true.

You stated crooked teeth and that I clarified on. There is a difference between crooked and open bite. Two very different afflcitions. Many sadly think if someone sucks there thumb it will cause over bites, under bites, teeth to come in side ways, etc. That is very different from open bite where it looks like the mouth is constantly open.

My late mother-in-law told me one I had never heard of until she caught me sewing on a Sunday. She said that on Monday I will be tearing out those stitches by my nose! (Never happened)

That is one I've never heard of before. Not sure what it means either but who knows with some of them.
