I've always loved diet pepsi until yesterday that is. my sister also loves diet pepsi but she told me that aspartame, which diet pepsi is sweetened with can cause cancer. I was just wondering if any of you knew if this was true.

Cancer is the least of your problems when it comes to aspartame. This stuff can destroy your health. If you are going to drink diet sodas, look for ones that say Splenda on the label. Splenda is not perfect BUT it is a LOT safer that aspartame. If you want to know what aspartame does, how it does it and why it is still on the market - http://www.dorway.com and http://www.wnho.net/aspartamenews.htm Aspartame was destroying my husband's health and his memory and when we removed it from his diet, his health improved and his memory is no longer getting worse (he will never get back what he lost though).

Thanks for your concern. He started with the aspartame when it first came out and they said it "was safe", no calories, and no after taste (like saccharin). He was in the military and they were always after him about his weight so this was important to him. He drank lots of diet sodas and used it in his coffee and tea. After almost 25 years of using it he became diabetic even though he was only a little over weight (10 - 15 pounds), exercises a lot and has NO family history of diabetes. Worse, the doctors could not get his blood sugar down where they said it should be, had him on 3 different meds twice a day and were talking about insulin. I found out about the aspartame and figured it wouldn't hurt and might help to get rid of it. Just a couple of weeks with NO aspartame and his blood sugar dropped and is now well controlled with just 1/2 of ONE pill once a day. He will always be diabetic because of the damage it did to him BUT he is well controlled and it is no longer life threatening. His memory though was realy bad for a while. One time he stood in our Tai Chi class and made a very offensive comment about a politician. I later brought him proof that what he said was false. He denied ever saying it and said he would NEVER have said such a thing. I told him he said it in front of our class and next class he asked them if he had said that and they ALL said he had. Since stopping the aspartame no NEW incidents have occurred but there are still a lot of things that he doesn't remember from when he was using it during the last few years.

I have been drinking Diet Pepsi for many years and haven't had a problem. I had heard about the sweetener also and yes I heard it may cause cancer. But I haven't any problems at all. I have a blood test every year. Cancer is higher in people that it runs in the family history. Cancer doesn't run in my family so I worry less about it. I drink Diet Pepsi as I worry about getting Diabetes. It runs high in our family in the late years of life. Plus I control my weight with it. I enjoy drinking all the Diet Pepsi flavors...Wild Cherry, Strwberries n Cream and just Diet Pepsi..

Please switch to Diet Rite, Diet 7 Up and any other diet drink with Splenda instead of aspartame. By the time the damage starts showing up from aspartame, it is sometimes irreversable. Also, I know several people who were misdiagnosed and treated for other diseases when they actually had aspartame poisoning. (Everything from MS, lupus, migraines, diabetes, fibromyalgia, etc. gets diagnosed instead of aspartame poisoning because the syptoms depend on what part of your body is affected and it is not the same for every one. Doctors will tell you that you are not responding well to the standard treatment or your symptoms are atypical and this is usually because you either do NOT have the disease you have been poisoned OR the aspartame is aggravating the disease and making it worse.)

I reciently quit Diet Coke for the aspertame. Its been a struggle for me because I love it but I need to make better choices for my health. The makers of this aspertame care more about making money they they do our health. It was tested on rats and caused them cancer but as long as we only drink a little we only have a little bigger chance to get cancer. Why do we want to raise or risks at all? Why does the FDA not care enought to educated the people more about what we are putting in our bodies or better yet keep these poisions off our shelves all together? I think really if we looked into this all more then we would be shocked by the truth of it all.
