My dog is constantly licking his leg in one spot only. He has lot his hair and had an infection. We've been treating it with medication but it is pricey. What can we do so he stops licking his leg?
Wrap a bandage around it? Or any other suggestions please help!

You can try purchasing or making (i'm not sure how you would go about making one) one of those cones that they put on dogs after surgery. That way, he can't get to his leg. If he has an infection, you should really take him to the vet, though. If he does not have an infection and is just chewing their for no reason, you can try putting bitter apple on it (it's this really yucky tasting stuff) or hot sauce. Unfortunatly for me, my pup LOVES hot sauce!

yeah get some cream from the vets and wrap it with a bandage, dogs will instinctively lick wound, like humans pick or scrtch wounds and we put bandages on our wounds so put a bandage on theirs

I have the same thing with my dog only without an infection. He started licking and chewing his hind leg. I found out that they're called "hot spots" and dogs tend to do this. I found a great holistic approach from Pet Meds. It's a small bottle of a clear liquid for "hot spots" which I put only 5-6 drops into his water and after about a week he stopped biting his leg. It does work. It's also not expensive. You might want to give this a try.

Make him wear a bigger collar...know the kind I mean? Our dog had to wear one when she was spayed, to keep her from licking her stitches. It kindof looks like a big sattelite dish. They can't lick when they're wearing those collars.

My dogs are doing it often when boring. I have to walk or play with them.

You can get a cone to put around your dog's neck. It will keep him from chewing, biting, or licking the wound. Bandages won't work, since he will only chew at it. You can call your vet and see if they have one. If not ask them where can you get one. Hope he get's better.

Get a piece of cardboard and cut a half moon shape from it put it around hid neck and tape the ends together so he can't get to the spot. You have to be careful it doesnt get infected. Have the vet check him out.

i tried putting a bandage on my dog but it was no use... he used to renove it wit his mouth... since he have lots of hair so what u can do is cut the hair around that place , so that more air comes to that place... then apply the medication...to prwvent him from licking give home some pet toy so that he is besy wit it....

I agree with earlier response. My German Shepard also had a problem with hot spots. They would ooze a clear liquid, smell bad, sometimes get infected. They usually happened when she got nervous or scared. Most vets I have known will not do much for this or if they will it is meds that have other harmfull side effects. Find a holistic vet or a store that sells natural remedies and get something for hot spots. After reading an earlier post about your dog, it might also be boredom and/or nerves so look for something for these issues also.
