I have a syberian husky and japanese chen. I dont have a problem with them two because they get along so well. My problem starts the other day when my sister in law give us a cat as a gift. The japanese chen is okay with the cat, my syberian husky is not. He keeps on barking and chasing the tiny cat. What will I do? How will I get these two be good friends? Please help! It is giving me head ache.

Thanks for replying. Although I prefer dogs more than cats, I don't think I could kill a cat or anything for that matter. I appreciate animals and surely appreciate the giver of that lovely kitten :)

I don't agree with a lot of the comments about the husky and cat never being able to get along, would depend a lot on the temperament of ur pets but I have 2 siberian huskies and a cat and they get along fine, not exactly the best of friends but they don't fight, have more issues between the two dogs. If you want them to get on then it'll take time, we've always had a bit of trouble when introducing new pets but they all accepc each other in the end, just takes a bit of patience, and acting as a referee when they are together. I would probably go with the advice of getting rid of the cat though if you're not attached to it, probably a lot easier in the long run!

If it gets too bad you may have to give one away, most likely the cat. But, give them some time maybe things will work out

Pets - My pets.
I have a dog and cat. It took the dog about a week or so before they would get along at all. Now, they play together. Give it time. Make sure that they both see you spending time with the other and you may even want to hold the cat and take it over to the dog. As long as you're holding it the dog should be tolerable.

Did Your sister-in-law know you had the dogs before giving you the cat? If so, sounds like a spite gift. I would either return the cat or take to the pound for adoption by some one else. FEW cats and dogs have good relations.

I have had several husky's and cats - at the same time. Is the cat full grown or a kitten? How old is the siberian? It is not uncommon for adult dogs to chase cats, especially if the cat runs. They view it as a game. Our female dog chases only one of our 2 cats (the other cat rules the roost). She will lay waiting for the cat to bolt - she is scolded and told to leave the cat alone. She usually responds to the scold, but occassionaly has to be put into the garage or outside until she settles down. Granted the cat also teases her... she will be outside and the cat with tease her at the window - no wonder she chases him (plus he runs). There is some jealousy going on between them. I would keep the husky and cat away from one another, introducing them to one another gradually. I totally disagree the husky's are killers - I have never seen this and have owned many of them. One way we used to introduce young cats to the dogs, was to hold the cat above the dog and let the dog smell the cat, the whole time you are doing this tell the dog to be nice to the cat & scolding if the dog even looked like they would do something they shouldn't with the cat. This isn't something to do only once, do it frequently. Gradually the dog will learn to accept the cat. They may never be friends, however they can accept one another. We have done this many times very successfully.

The cat and the dog can not reach an agreement forever. It would be better if you separated the place for them because if they in one place then that will happen was the fight between them. So I suggested was better separated their place then.

I think it'll be very hard to make two animals who have already aged and are not puppies anymore to become friends. I'm just not 100% sure that it would be possible to force them to be friends. If a dog decides to bark at a particular animal for any reason, it will. "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," as the quote goes, so maybe let bigons be bigons.

Why would someone give you a cat when you have two dogs? Cats and dogs are notorious for not getting along. However, it is possible but it just takes time. Usually it is better, from my expierience to indroduce a puppy to a cat and not vice versa.

It will probably be tough. We had a cat that we've had for four years now and six months ago bought two shih tzu's. our cat doesn't want any part of them and smacks them on their heads if they come to close.

well from my experience with animals there are a few things you can do, one you can hold the cat in your and and have you dog sit beside you on the other side and pet both and show him/her that the cat isnt here to take their place it is here to be apart of the family and that is it litle or you could get rid of one of them or just seperate them with the baby fences it all depends on how your animals are and there temperment but that is the only solutions i can think of. if i have any more ideas i will post them
