'Good Old Days'

We often hear people say "Those were the good old days", I wonder why people use this phrase so frequently. In my opinion the so called 'good old days' can not be better than the present. The next day is always better than the previous day. Will anyone contradict me if I say that we are far more comfortable and much happier in the 21st century, except the threat of breaking of an atomic war or the global pollution?

As each generation grows older they can reflect on what their lives were like and compare it to what this young generation is going through now. I must admit, when I was young we were constantly bombared with the imminent threat of a nuclear war from Russia, which never happened the same as you are now bombarded with the threat of terrorism. Depending on who you see as the terrorists!!!! I have to say though, as I am reaching forty I have seen a big decline in morals and respect for each other since I was a kid within my own country. Yes there are more people enjoying wealth and happier lives but it is at the expense of those who are still living in poverty or under the rule of dictators and liars, and I mean western society as well. I wish we could go back to when i was younger, less street crime, less rude and aggressive people. I just hope this younger generation can sort out alot of what is going on. They have so much more information available to them than we ever did. I will get off my soap box now. I hope you enjoy every part of your youth and hopefully will not look back and use this phrase. it completely depends on the context... someone 50 with HIV... in the good old days before i got aids... but can also be the present is better... i used to be on the dole until i won lotto... i think it has a lot to do with economics and how things are more expensive now... also say 20 years ago there was no mobile phone or internet bill to pay, you couldn't get sued for falling through someones roof when trying to break into their house etc etc there was less to worry about
