Should there be harsher drink/driving (DUI) penalties?

There are so many alcohol involved accidents especially over the holiday period. How can people be discouraged to not drink and drive?

I think some people will just never be deterred. There should be stiffer penalties, more breathalyzer tests and more speed cameras. Law enforcement agencies should regularly monitor drinking establishment at closing time but I have yet to see this happen.

Your comment is so true! Some will never be deterred. Most states in Australia are increasing their presense near pubs etc but the message doesn't get accross to some.

I think that the punishments need to be harsher! I know this one guy who had 14 DUI'S!!! And 4 of them just in that year. This is REDICULOUS!!! After the 2nd time, I think they should do serious jail time so they realize that it's a very serious crime! I also think that even the first time you are arrested you should have to go to MADD meetings just like having to go to AA. Obviously the punishments aren't stiff enough, because people are still doing it. Maybe they will realize when they kill their loved ones or someone elses, but I guess then it will be to late. Good Topic!
