I am thinking of becoming a bone marrow donor, just was wondering if anyone has done this before, and if so what is all involved? What are the chances that you would be called as a match?

Since the next best chance to find a tissue match is within one's own ethnicity, the chances of finding a match are between only 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 1 million. Realistically, there is not much chance that you would be called. But think of how difficult it must be when a person needs a match but there is no one there. I have been registered with Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches (A3M) www.asianmarrow.org for probably close to 20 years now and am still hoping to be able to help someone one day. You can check into www.nmdp.org and maybe that will help you find the information that you're looking for. I wish you the best! Also, if you sign up for a free account at www.myindianplace.com, and put A3M in the referral code box, they will make a donation to Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches organization. Aloha!

Tha'ts very nice of you. I know a few people who do this. Only once has been called as a match. She has to go in once a week to donate bone marrow. There is no guarantee that it can save a life. I think that the donor is kept a secret from the person who receives it.
