Health Care, better or worse with HMO

I remember when they first started touting HMOs. Everyone was praising how the HMO would revolutionize the medical field by making services easier to obtain, more affordable, and holding hospitals accountable for holding down unnecessary testing. I can't remember what it was like before, although, I feel that since HMOs have come into play, costs have skyrocketed, services are poor, you can't see a specialist unless you are referred by your regular doctor, they deny some medical treatments, even though this treatment could help save a life. Am I the only one who feels that HMOs have ruined the health care of our nation?
