or are they worth the price?
Many people I know swear by their Macs/G4's etc... I've toyed with them, but I just don't see what the big deal is about.

They are definitely worth the price. I have worked on both Mac and PC. I find lots of things I like about the PC, but there is a lot to like about the Mac. I do graphic design and the programs used for this just run better on a Mac. Macs don't get all the viruses that PCs get. But on flip side there are so many programs that can only be run on a PC. So I have both a PC and a Mac. Solves my problem.

Don't use mac if you don't have to.
But maybe in other time have any project, try Mac, and you'll see the different.
Let me give you some example.
As a photographer, you need to do several process from the camera to your computer.
in PC :
You transfer your RAW photos using Adobe Bridge, and then you adjust the color with Adobe Portfolio (which hasn't been released), and then you edit the photos with Adobe Photoshop.
in Mac:
You transfer your RAW photos using Apperture, manage it, color adjusting, adding tags also by Apperture. And if you wanna retouch, use Adobe Photoshop.
You see, too many programs used for single line of work. Do you know how big those files are ?
Adobe Photoshop allready 2Gb, Adobe Portfolio 4Gb, Adobe Bridge 200Mb.
But Apperture only 150Mb.
Size does matter. That's why Mac always faster then PCs.
