I will never understand why so many people seem to think that poker is simply a game of luck. There is so much skill in poker it is mind boggling. To know when to bet, how much and more importantly when to even play is so crucial and without this knowledge you are almost guaranteed to fail. If you take Blackjack as a similar example. A lot of people know basic blackjack strategy. This tells you exactly what to do in every possible situation. It takes the element of a hunch or a feeling out of the game. Might not be as much fun but it reduces the house edge to around half a percent. Statiscians claim that if you do not use basic strategy and go on hunches each time you could be giving around 20% edge back to the casino. Its similar in poker, just you are playing another player rather than the casino. If you just ride your luck then you are bound to end up giving the other players your money. Play with the correct poker strategy then you give yourself a better chance in the game.

Luck does play a part in the game. However, I have been playing and learning for the past two years and I am now consistently finishing higher in the money. If it were simply luck, I would not see my winnings increasing. Yes, you have to realize luck will play a part and knock you out sometimes. But if you learn the game, you can begin to limit your losses.
