I know when I go to a sushi restaurant, I'm always looking to try something new. But, for fear of the unknown, I always wind up getting the same thing, or variations of the same thing every time. I love spicy tuna rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, eel rolls, etc. Does anyone have any other favorite kind of rolls or pieces of sushi that they would recommend?

I'm a vegetarian (the non-fish eating kind) so my choices are very limited. I like the ones that are just kelp, rice, cucumber and carrot.

Have you ever tried a sweet potato roll? They've got tempura-fried pieces of sweet potato inside the sushi. I really enjoy them!

And I got violent food poisoning the one and only time I ever ate at Pizzeria Uno. Many people love it.
Getting sick from sushi is probably less likely than from most fast food joints because sushi chefs are so rigorously trained, whereas fast food workers are at the bottom of the employment barrel.
I have eaten sushi on three continents, and have never failed to enjoy it. And have never gotten sick. Not in Kangnung, South Korea, Kyiv, Ukraine or anywhere in the US.
Sushi is one of the foods I couldn't live without! :-)~~ (drooling)

My favorite kind of sushi is what most restaurants call the "Spider Roll". It's soft shell crab. Really, really yummy and crunchy. I'd also recommend trying halibut, yellowtail, and sea scallop. If you're looking to get out of the habit of always ordering the same thing at restaurants, maybe ask the sushi chef if they have a sushi or sashimi sampler? It might have some stuff you won't like (I personally am never going near eel sushi -- just the idea of it is scary), but it would let you try a lot of different things and you can decide what you like from that and maybe come away with some new favorites!

Last week I tried sea urchin sushi for the first time-- it was definitely an experience! It was very, very soft and had a very light taste. I'm not sure if I'd eat it again, but it's something I'd recommend doing because it was interesting and the sort of thing it's fun to have tried. I had a little bite of my friend's toro too, which is fatty tuna-- apparently cut from the most delicious part of the fish. I don't know how to describe it except to say that it reminded me of the ocean. It wasn't for me, though, but he said it was the most delicious thing he'd ever had, so maybe you should try that too!

I don't know if you've ever had a California roll but they are most "accepted" roll or most people trying sushi for the first time. They have crab, celery, and avacado wrapped in seaweed and rice...They are amazing! Another good one, if you like tempura, is the Vegas Roll and the Surf and Turf. Surf and Turfs have steak in them while a Vegas Roll has cream chees and salmon...All around sushi is really my favorite!

The unknown isn't something to fear, but a new adventure to embrace!
I love yellowtail and tuna set on a small roll of rice (both raw).
Rainbow roll is three kinds of raw fish rolled around the rice, rather than the roice around the fish, and it is so tasty. One of my favorites.
