Salt water reef aquariums....

Hiya, Aren't there any salt water hobbiests out there? Maybe I'm typing in the wrong tags, but I haven't seen one yet. I know there are so many other reef forumns out there that perhaps no one has stumbled in here. I have two nano-type aquariums with a black capped basslet, Fridmani Pseudocromis, and a six-line. I used to keep a ton of zoas, but I've got a few SPS now, some acans and other things.

I've done some posting under the "fish" interest and seen some people mention their salt water tanks. I myself have participated in discussions regarding fresh water but am debating whether or not to set up a reef tank. My impression is that they are very difficult to maintain and demand a lot of maintinance time of which I don't have. Do you find this to be true? I would even consider hiring an aquarium specialist to do maininance for me if the price was right.

Hi there! I guess I haven't looked under 'fish'. Salt water is a bit more time consuming, but once you have the right equipment in places its not too bad. If you have good skimmers, auto top off, and once the tank gets established....its just regular every 2 weeks or so water changes. Actually, the larger the tank the easier. In smaller tanks the water quality goes bad quickly and you have to do more work to maintain them. What kind of fish do you keep? I keep telling my hubby I wouldn't mind setting up a freshwater, we used to have discus. I would kind of like to do a planted tank as well...or even a terrarium with froggies. Thanks for the response!

Currently I only have a ten gallon with a few different tetras and live plants. To me the live plants make the aquarium come alive. I'm not much for those plastic plants that some people put in their tanks. I like to keep things as natural as I can. In the past I've had much larger fresh water tanks. I kept 3 Oscars, an albino cat, and a Jack Dempsey in a 100 gallon tank and by the time I moved and had to give the fish away, they had almost already outgrown the tank. Also, thank you for the reassurance that the salt water tank may not be as difficult to maintain as I originally thought. I think I'll give it a try.
