People are saying that global warming is but a theory. I don't believe it. It is happening! I live here in Canada, Usualy durring winter, You'll see snow and a good bit of it.(Those who think we live in igloos all year, it's not true -_-) Anywho I've been hearing so much about global warming, My teacher even uses Global warming as an example when we come across the subject of the world and electricity. Always saying that if we continue to be ignorant and polute the world with our carbon dioxide. Now Is it happening. People are saying if we continue the glaciers will be almost completely melted in 40-60 years therefore meaning a world almost completely flooded and meaning that we won't be able to grow plants and we will die of hunger if we do survive global warming(Not saying it will happen)What do you think about this situation?

Global Warming is a fact, not a theory. As far as I know, the US is the only country in the world which does not acknowledge this fact, but this has a lot to do with the fact that they're also the biggest polluter and contributor to global warming in the world. By denying Global Warming to their people (most of whom are so indoctrinated that they believe their government is always right and always to be trusted), they stop their people putting pressure on to change their ways, which would be costly, and in fact go against the whole ethos of their country (take whatever you want, and screw the others - in this case, nature and the rest of the world). The fact is that global warming would be happening anyway, as we're coming out of an ice-age, but our polluting and greedy ways (both in polluting, and destroying trees, rainforests, and the natural environment to such an extent that nature is having trouble balancing to compensate for pollution) are speeding up the process at an exponential rate. The only way to slow global warming to a rate to which the earth (and we as a species) can acclimatise and adapt for survival, is to change our ways. I think that nature and the earth will quite possibly survive, but we may not (or at least the majority of us) - which in turn is probably what's best for nature! The human race is like an invasive virus, which is becoming more and more deadly to the earth and other species - like a supervirus or a cancer, we're adapting and trying to change the nature of the world on a molecular level, destroying the very nature of nature itself. The only chance nature has to survive is to wipe us out, or for us to start to live in harmony with our surrounding ecosystem (as the East has built its whole culture and ethos around). Maybe with China emerging as the new superpower, their cultural influence will spread to the West, and we may yet harmonise with nature, and see greedy capitalism for what it is: evil, invasive, destructive and short-sighted.

I think that you'll find that certain species will survive (or you would were you to survive too!), and there's always the sea - where life came from in the first place. A warmer sea would probably help the development of new life forms - evolution is nature's way of survival, and there are many forms of life which lie dormant for decades before surfacing, breeding and burying themselves underground. Nature can balance itself, and new species would probably develop, as long as there's still an ocean and an atmosphere.

yes but evolution happens over 100s and 1000s of years. How can things evolve at the rate that we are causing change to the earth?
They also say that global warming could trigger another ice age.

Global warming is overhyped by the environmentalists. It won't have the world flooded in 60 years that is just pure propoganda. It will still be hundreds to thousands of years until that happens IF it happens. The environment runs in cycles and they are taking advantage of the warm cycle we are in for their political motives.

I do believe global warming is happening but they say that the drought in Australia is not caused by climatic changes brought about by global warming (though this was stated by a CSIRO scientist and after the diet debacle we all know how easily bought off they are...)

Global warming is a fact. it would happen with or without the help of smog/polution. just more frequently with the smog/polution.
The Ice Caps melt down but not totaly, the oceans cool, and rise, flooding will occure on the coasts. then the ice caps will refreeze and the oceans will begin to warm. it will be and endless cycle that takes many thousand of years, but will keep occuring. over and over.

Of course the level of CO2 being trapped in the atmosphere is increasing. Of course the temperature of the earth is increasing. Of course polar ice is beginning to melt. But the data is correlational. And we all know correlation doesn't imply causation. We need more evidence to see if humans are the result of this strange weather patter we are seeing in early January.

It is not a theory. It is actuaaly happening. Because of it, by 2040 all the snow, glaciers are melting in Antartica. What will it mean for us? Well you know get prepared because 2007 is going to be the world's hottest year.

Every year is the new hottest year ever! Why is it that America refuses to acknowledge this.....?

I actually can't understand how anyone can deny global warming, to me its almost like someone looking up at the sky and saying it's green. In our everyday lives we can feel the effect of global warming from the rising of temperatures, I was just discussing this with a friend the other day becausee now it's January and usually at this time of year I wouldn't even consider leaving the house without a coat, but this year I have, in January! I also do hiking in the alps in Austria and I've personally talked to the locals who have pointed a km up the valley and told me that a few years ago, that was where the glaciers stretched to. Also, if you go up a mountain of a decent height in summer there are usually snow fields at the top because it's so high but I've seen less and less of them recently and it really worries me to see it so dramatically.

Don't listen to those people saying it's a theory. We need to do everything possible to stop or halt global warming before it really is too late. I live in FL. Our winters aren't too cold usually, but for true Floridians, it's still pretty cold. This winter we've been up in the 80's more than once.

I do think it's happening but I think some people are putting it way out of proportion. What we're experiencing right now is El Nino and if you would look back in history has happened before. It's not a matter of we're all going to die when the icebergs melt at the end of the year or anything. Do I think our planet is suffering from the abuse? By all means! And I do think we need to do something to stop it. But I don't think what we're experiencing now in weather has anything to truly do with it.

It is somewhat a part of global warming - the temperature i mean.
I mean if you look at it pollution is causing the green house gases right? Well these gases are make the sun's intensity much stronger. which is melting the icebergs and therefore is part of globalwarming...

Hello!Global warming is not good not only for us,but for animals, for all that make part of our activitys and we must to think at that most seriosily.MAybe now we are happy, because is warm when must to be cold, but what will we do when the summer will came?!In my country this year wasn't snow, but others years Christmas and New Year always was snow outside...I'm worried, because this Global Warming is spoilin an rhythm of nature, and ours of course.

Actually the truth about global warming is that, there is also global dimming, not very many people hear about that, but it also is happening which means that there is less light coming in and less light = less heat. But this year in particular has been rather warm, I know what you are saying, I live in CT which is about as north as Canada and we recieve snow pretty much every year, but as to this point we really haven't recieved much, we got a light snow once but not what I was hoping for especially since I hope to go snowboarding soon.

This has been the warmest winter I have ever experienced in my 47 years. Today it was 55 degrees here in Rhode Island. We also saw more rain this summer and last versus snow, which would account for the 18" of water in my basement last year. :(
There should be a way to harness this heat, and it has been proven for many many years that solar panels on your rooftops can provide you with enough heat and electrical power to get you off the grid. HGTV has a new program called "Life with Ed" and it stars Ed Begley, Jr. He has a totally self sufficient home in the Hollywood area. He grows his own food, provides his own power and even cooks in a solar oven.
For those who are interested, there is a solar festival in Vermont every summer. You can look it up on the web, solarfest.com It was great, and we gained some invaluable knowledge on living green.
I don't know that we can turn this damage back to the way it was, but I think we need to try and stop any more damage from occurring.

its happening just very slowly, The Earth's average temperature has increased by about 1°F (0.5°C) over the past century. however its still cooler today than it was 75 million years ago... Seventy-five million years ago, the Earth's average temperature was about 10°F (5.6°C) higher than it is today. Almost everywhere the climate was warm and humid.

if you take time to sit down and study the scientific explanations and examples of the effects of global warming that are happening in our environment, you might change your mind. The evidences are overwhelming. Ice cap melting, rising temperature of the sea, rising sea level among others. Scientists will not express their findings without first weighing the facts and through a series of experiments come up with a conclusion. Anyone who can not dispute their findings is not in the position to say they are wrong. But still, there are those who still think it as just an unproven theory. A closer look at the scientific findings will be helpful. At any rate, our belief or non-belief will not change the fact the a big change in the environment is happening now. Good day and thanks for posting an interesting subject.

the causes
pollution
the deforestration
it s a great danger if it increases at such rapid pace people will be infected with rare diseases
and im afraid that will be the beginning of the end

Global warming is happening. I live in Illinois, for 37 years now. My birthday is in January, so I know the month of January very well. Every year all my life, the average temp. in January has been in the teens or below. This is how its always been till last year. Last year there wasn't one day in January under 40 degrees! This year its about the same so far. Now how do you go from the coldest month of the year to spring weather the entire month? Global warming thats how.
