friends

could anybody tell me what the word "friends" refers to? i thought i knew, but i am very confused... there are a lot of persons i knew, with most of them i actually chat. but i don't know if i could aspect them to ever help me with something... we talk, we joke... but are they really my friends? 'cause it seems i have lost my faith in people... i don't know if my oldest friends are actually my friends... sometimes i think they envy me... and i don't know why... :(
