Are you more inclined to write to please or push the envelope?

Some people what to write general pieces or stay within the confines established guidelines genre. I will do that to get published, but I will also write to experiment with style and genre push the envelope of the norm. Which do you prefer?

I prefer to be able to write whatever I want, but in order to get published I'll stick to whatever guidelines are set down. I'd rather be able to experiment and play around with themes and styles and words, but sadly not too many new writers who are just starting to get published have that luxury.

I like to push the envelope depending on what it is I am writing. The current book of short stories I am writing is such a style that is quite spiritual yet contraversial.
I think the style you choose to write should be yours and not to try and please the general population. As some of my favortite authors, they are quite off the wall with their styles and no matter how quirky or thought provoking, in the end it has its place and reason.
I'm also working on a series of photographs that I know already by some of the people I have talked to and showed some of the photos too have found them somewhat contraversial but that's okay, art is how you see it.

I write advice on my website, so I don't technically have guidelines. All the same though, I write in general instead of being too opinionated. That way I'm not unintentionally insulting people and I'm just simply giving advice anyone can use.
