Copyright ... What is this?

I'm a software developer.. i work hard and i try to put copyright on my works .. this protection should cover literary, scientific,artistic etc etc works. I don't like someone to copy my works .. Copyright laws grant (or must grant) the creator the exclusive right to reproduce,distribute, perform work publicly. Exclusive means only the creator of the work, can access to it and decides all on it. It costs .. and not always work .. Do you use this thing? on which of your works?Thanks for your attention....
