Mahabharata is not India's famous its world's famous. Mahabharata was actually penned down by Sri Ganesh but was recited or dictated by Rishi Vyas Dev and not By Rishi Vashistha. There is a interesting story here regarding penning down of Mahabharata, Its said that while Rishi Vyas Dev requested Ganesh ji to to act stenographer Ganesh ji placed a condition that if Rishi vyas stops even for once during his dictation then that would be the end of his taking notes. The rishi agreed but placed a counter conter condition that without understanding the meaning of every verse shri ganesh would not write it down and both agreed. They started and whenever Rishi Vyas Dev needed time he would tell such a verse that shri Gansh would have to pause to think about the meaning and Rishi Vyas got the time to think for his next verse... The slokas or verses which Shri Ganesh ji could not understand are known in Mahabharata as KUTA SLOKA.
