Perhaps better support networks. I think teachers should explain to their students that if they failed it's not the end of the world, the pupils need to understand that, not just for themselves but for their friends. If one of my friends ever fail an exam or get a mark the rest of us knowhe/she won't be happy with we're straight there telling them not to listen to anyone who's yelling at them and telling them what they could do about it. I think a support network in your friends is the most important thing you can have because its your friends that you are most likely to believe and your friends who are most likely to comfort you. In my experience, families have been harder to persuade that they need to be comforting towards their children but if they were then I think that that would be even more effective than their friends.

Unless their self image and self belief is increased, they won't realise the value for live. It is essential to make them believe in themselves first.

They are only momentarily what you might call 'mad' and you have to see the world from their perpective, they think (wrongly) that they'll fail in life because they've failed some stupid exam. I agree that life is precious but I dissagree that we should be judging their actions when we don't understand their situation, life has to get pretty bad for anyone to contemplate doing something like that because we are biologically programmed against it.

I agree with Penguinshop on a number of points. It is very sad that these young people have so much pressure placed on them that they are prepared to die rather than accept a temporary failure. I don't think that a lot of people actually realise how competitive it is in India. You can't even work in some major call centres without a university degree! Employers are faced with so many choices when it comes time to increase staff. Why do you think that the Microsoft's, HP's and Intel's have all set up major sites there?
There definitely needs to be support groups and there needs to be a higher level of understanding shown by family members and friends. The competitiveness in the job space is only going to get worse but if these young people can be made to realise that life is full of ups and downs and it is not the end of the world, they have a chance for a future.
