SOS! Living next to a Puppy Mill!

Hey everyone! My family and I are at the end of our rope, as is the rest of the neighborhood. Our next door neighbors have been running what can only be described as a puppy mill for the last 6 months to 1 year. They cram their animals together in one area where they fight and bark relentlessly. They have also been powerwashing the feces onto our side of the property and the smell is now so bad we cannot even sit outside anymore. The animals have had kennel cough and fleas, and I suspect that they have worms also. They are not taken to a vet regularly and at least one puppy or mother from every litter dies within one week. I feel bad for the dogs and the noise and smell are awful. We have tried to discuss the situation with our neighbors, as the place where we live is a residential area and not a place for this kind of business, but they do not feel they are doing anything wrong. What course of action can we take in this matter? One of our neighbors contacted the authorities and was told that there were no lease or number of animal laws in our county so they could not do anything. We've tried the health department and local state and county agencies and no one will even come out and look. We do not have a local humane society and according to the AKC/CKC/ASPCA websites there is almost no way to force our nieghnors to stop what they are doing. Someone please help!!

If you have a video camera, I would tape what is going on as much as possible. Do you have a local TV station - call them and have them come out. Are they breeding certain breeds - call that club and report them. In fact have all the neighbors call and report them - when they register the pups as having come from these people a flag will go up. Contact shows like Good Morning America, Montel, Oprah, etc. to see if they are doing any stories on stopping puppy mills. Continue to look up web sites that are against puppy mills. Contact the Farm Beauru and do a soil test on your property to check for issues there. Is it possible to find out where they are selling the pups? Take your pictures there. I hope this helps. This type of situation gives good breeders a bad rep.

I agree! If no one else will help you than turn to the media and expose them publicly. Good luck!

The local animal control or shelter should come out .I don't think ACK or CKC or any registier would do anything after all they are just the keeper of the stud books and over registration the aspca is a national org not really ones to call either .If the animal control won't come out call the sherif office they might be over cruity cases there .

I tried looking for a shelter near you and also looked at the ASPCA site. I see what you mean about it not looking very helpful. What about contacting your local newspaper. They may be able to direct you somewhere and maybe do an article. Also try calling your local tv news station and see if they can help. The more public you make it the more people will be aware, and those that can actually help may come forward. Have you considered contacting PETA www.peta.org I am sure they can help or at least give you direction. Good luck, the poor abused animals of the world are counting on people like us to help.

Every county has a animal control officer if not a humane society they would be who to call .Shelters or not ran by the aspca in fact the aspca has no shelters they are ran by local humane societies and the county should have one . not all shelters are ran by the humane society some are ran by the state . Look in the phone book under your county name then humane society or animal control they should help or at least you can get a number who to call .

How far are you from Ft. Payne? You might give the SPCA there a call... Here's their info: Phone: 256-845-9463 dekalbcountyspca@bellsouth.net If nothing else, they could maybe give you some ideas.

Yikes, I can't believe you have no one in authority willing to help or to guide you in the right direction. If you can't go directly to your city or township and file some sort of complaint or petition, then I would think it is time to go speak to an attorney. There may be some kind of motion you can file against them in court to make them control the dogs better and to keep the feces and other messes on their own side of the property.
