Do you shorten the life of your camcorder battery by charging it, as needed

I only use my JVC camcorder on occassion. I have only had it for about 6 months and would try to prevent shelling out money for batterys on a prematurely. If people have tips on how to maintain and extend the usage of a camcorder, it would be greatly appreciated.
