My fiance just called me from the gym. They have TV's playing and the news cast just said that we may have found life on Mars - but we just killed it. What?

Wait, what? I haven't checked the news yet, but I think I'm going to have to now! I'll get back to you if I find anything more on this. But that would be just like us, really. Find new life... and kill it!

Okay, I looked it up, and it's just a theory. There's no proof yet. A scientist has proven how life *could* exist on Mars, and theorizes that when we landed our first probe it could have destroyed the micororganisms out of not knowing what to look for.

Well, I guess I will have to check this out and get back to you on what I find. How could we kill life on Mars? Did NASA have some secret mission that we didn't know about. BRB!

No they didn't kill the life on the planet. heh They killed their samples. They are microb-like organisms and the researchers who had some samples were not looking at the samples for that form of life and so inadvertantly a test they did on the samples may have been the killer of it. If this theory is correct, it officially makes humans the Homer Simpson of the universe. :P *Homer holds tiny Martians in the palms of his hands* "Oh, boy! Look! Life on Mars!" *Homer claps hands together excitedly, and then realizes that was a big mistake. "D'oh!"

no... i did not hear anything about this on the radio or tv... but if it was true then i think that it would have made for such an explosive news story that every country's newspapers would have reported on it. since that did not happen then guess maybe there was a mistake in the reporting?

Nope - it's not a joke. Other commenters posted web links to the news articles. The CNN flash was kind of a teaser - as in they didn't give much information. But apparantly it could have theoretically happened in the 70's.

I heard this, too. It supposedly happened when the Viking explorer (late 70's I think) landed on Mars and was taking samples. Part of the sampling process was to add water to the soil sample and then heat it for some sort of analysis. Apparently, there may have been a micro-organism in the soil that was inadvertantly drowned and then cooked by this process. Oops.
