I love to make homemade mixes. They save time, money and are just plain better than commercial mixes. Homemade Biscuit mixes make a great addition to those giftbaskets for wedding showers, birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas or just when you want to say "I am thinking about you".
This is the recipe that I use. I keep some in my fridge all the time. I just made a batch this morning. These are great to put on top of creamed chicken or creamed turkey and bake. Yummy!
This recipe makes 12 cups of mix(enough for 48 biscuits)
Baking Powder Biscuit Mix
8 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup baking powder
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
4 teaspoons sugar
2 cups shortening, margarine or butter. I use shortening
I mix mine in my kitchenaid stand mixer. I love my mixer.I mix all the ingredients except the shortening till mixed well then add my shortening.
You can also use a food processor to mix it in. If using a food processor.
Process 4 cups flour, baking powder, salt cream of tartar, sugar, adn 1 cup shortening until the mix is the consistency of cornmeal. Pour into alarge bowl. Process the remaining 4 cups of flour and 1 cup shortening and using a wire wisk, mix throughly with the other batch. Refridgerate.
To make 6-8 biscuits, combine 1 1/l2 cups mix with 1/3 cup cold milk. Stir well with a fork until a slightly stiff dough forms. Drop biscuits from a tablespoon onto a baking sheet sprayed with oil. Bake in a prheated 450 oven for 12-14 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.

I agree, homemade is the best. I cook from scratch and that makes a difference too. The commercial mixes have so many preservatives and that nasty MSG.

Thank you for posting this recipe. I use baking mixes a lot and being able to make them from scratch is a bonus. I bought containers at Christmas that I intended to use for the purpose of holding the mixes. Now I can make them to hold my own. I will still give them to my kids as their birthdays roll around. I am doing the frugal gifts again this year. They will appreciate the mix and the container as well.

There is a homemade mix for nearly if not all commercial mixes. I always make my own mixes and spice combination. We try to not eat commercial mixes as they often have MSG and that stuff is not good for you.

So glad to get this recipe, when spring comes will make this up and use when we eat outside. Right now we are reducing the amount of bread we are eating so spring will be our goal. Will probably add some whole wheat flour with the regular flour. Thanks for sharing this mix recipe!!

Good recipe and thank you for sharing. I do a lot of baking and cooking from scratch as well, it saves a lot of money doesn't it? I'm making home made vegtable beef soup tonight and will use your recipe for the biscuits, thanks.
