What is your site's URL? It's also best to not make "a gateway page" like an enter page for your website (if it's a Top Level Domain, or TLD, rather). Rather, make the URL (TLD) that u submitted as the "main" page. I've learnt this with two of my sites. One, which i put an enter page is not very well ranked compared to the other which there's no "enter page", and which the main page of the website IS the URL (TLD) that i submitted itself.

Adding good content on a daily or weekly basis. Put a link to your site whenever you post in a forums, blog or even here in mylot. You can also try a few traffic exchanges to get a little traffic coming your way.

Make sure you use keywords relevant to your content. Design is important also; a website with perfect keywording but poor overall web design (error issues, ect) will make search listings and then fall to the bottom. As far as a list goes, here's a site with a listing of almost all search engines, good, bad, and irrelevant.
www.search-engines-megalist.com if I remember right. Good luck.

get lots of one way incoming links, you can achieve this by writing articles.
