In a society so focused on how we look physically, how is it we have found such extremes.
One one hand we have people who starve themselves because they think they need to look better and on the other we have people so obese they have to purhcase an extra plane ticket just to fit.
I am by no means a bodybuilder, or the most physically fit person. I do care about how I look though and I do my best to maintain a steady physical fitness level. It isn't that difficult.... why do we as a society fall into these categories so easily?

yes. we should accept the reality of being who we are. but we can always change if we want to. but we should always change for the better and not just because we want to fit in the place we call society.

I think the answer lies in how our world has changed around us. We've put so much emphasis on outter beauty that we abuse the inner self mentally. Those who fall in the two ends of over eating or under eating are usually suffering mentally also. Not all, but most. I also think that we've become so fat as a nation out of simple laziness. It's so easy to pick up the cell phone or cordless (you used to have to walk to the wall where the phone was) and dial up for a pizza delivery (you used to have to go pick up your own food, not have it delivered to the door), throw away the paper plates you ate it on (paper plates used to be used only for picnics and special events, normal people washed dishes), then sit back and flip through the channels (remotes used to be unheard of unless you count our fathers yelling our name to come change the channel for them! lol) and watch hours of television into the wee hours of the night (tv used to go off the air at 2am at the latest in most cities). Just that one day of "actions" proves how we've changed how much we do physically now.

maybe it depends on the situation a person is into. most people try to do something too much just to look better. i know people who go to dermatologists to have their skin into perfection. sometimes, they spend more on the skin doctors rather than spending enough money to their kids and family. i know friends, too who starve themselves just to look thinner.
i for one maintains my figure because i have ischemia. if i go overweight, my heart will have a hard time doing it's job which by then, usually results to a mild attack. but i don't starve myself. i eat a balanced diet.
as for my opinion, people should go for looks where they are comfortable with. like you, you have a good body built because you are comfortable with that kind of body. some do not feel good when they are thin but since society thinks thin women look better, they go on to heavy diets just to fit in.

beauty is a cause for living depending on how one interprets it. if you think being thin is beautiful, or being fat is the way to go, that is your belief, and it will sustain you no matter how others perceived you. the important thing is you FEEL GOOD about yourself because that is one thing that will make you LOOK beautiful regardless of your physical appearance.
To feel beautiful is to be healthy. Either way, both should be present in order to experience life at its fullest.

I agree with you ,but people who starve themselves,do so because their job demands it.Those people who are fanatic fitness freaks will definitely belong to either entertainment industry or fashion industry. They have to maintain their shape.,Otherwise ppl dont starve themselves but they count their calories.
And coming to obese ppl who have to buy two plane tickets are like that only because they dont care for health.Even I am obese(not very obese),I know I shouldnt eat unhealthy stuff,But I do binge on them,You just cant change the extremes.

Physical appearance is very important not only because of the looks but also of the other benefits of it. Being physically fit is the closest thing to become healthy. But the attitude is also an important factor to be able to get respect from the people.

I think it's a matter of how we feel about ourselves. If we don't care then we don't pay attention to what we eat and drink, if we do, then we make a concerted effort to watch what we eat and drink, then we have people who hate to exercise and the ones who love it. It's a matter of the individual's personal interests and lifestyle in my opinion.

I kind of feel the same way. I try to look nice...but only to please myself. I would like to loose some weight and become more active. But, society will not determine what is right or wrong for me. I have seen both extremes and for some it looks great and on others not so much. Of course, that is only my opinion. Maybe there is a disconnect with physical appearance and health. I am more concerned about my health as it relates to being over or under weight. Others, I guess, are concerned with looking good to please others. TV and magazines are the most responsible for these fads.

Actually its not difficult but a matter of interest and a will to do. Many fat people want to slim and smart but are not able to go to gym or practice any kind of exercise at home and the reason they give is "we don't have time" but the reality is that they surely lack will power to do it. I consider myself a lazy person because its been a year that i promised myself to go fro swimming but i cannnot wake up early and other time i am busy with my work. I hope one day i will make it..ahah.hahhah.

Well, there are always going to be extremes. I feel so badly for people who feel that they have to starve themselves _as well as_ people who are so obese that they cannot physically leave their homes. I am really somewhere in the middle, but have dealt with weight issues for my entire life. I absolutely hate how much emphasis is placed on looks in human society, but it is unfortunately human nature. I just wish for so many young girls' sakes that we weren't as a society teaching them that to be popular or be in the norm that you have to be so incredibly thin. It's just not right.

I think it has more to do with your own personal self-esteem. I am a little overweight but am very comforatble in my own skin. If I really cared about what other people think, then I would be on a diet ASAP. On the other end of the scale are the obese...they most likely have a terribly low self-esteem and just let themselves go. Society today put too much credence on how people look.

I guess the only reason why that our society focused on our physical state is that people have EYES..Imagine that if we don't have eyes we will depend on other senses to judge on the people, like smelling sense. Then the question will be:Why our society depends on the scents??!!!!
