Why is it so expensive to go to college?

Our society's standards are increasing every year. They want you to have an Associates, then it was a Bachelor's. Nowadays, lots of jobs want the MINIMUM requirement of a Bachelor's and want people to have Master's Degrees. But the cost of college is so expensive!! I live in Germany, and there is more to it, but long story short, the German's college is FREE, so is there medical insurance. Wouldn't that be nice if the government paid for schooling? Are the prices outrageous, especially those who want to get their degree for a better paying job?
