What breed of cat is your preference for a pet and why?

I need help with this one. When we move back to the states (we are currently in Germany) we want to buy a pet. We had a dog, but that didn't work out. But I absolutely love cats. My husband and I and a couple of friends are disputing on what breed is great. She is saying a calico, I'm thinking American Bobtail. My husband just wants one that is loving, likes to be petting and shorthaired.
