The O2 sensor might be broken.
Not sure how many sensors your car has but if the sensor is broken it does not effect the car performance as such, in the sense you will not feel any jerks or performance issues.
But what is happening is that the exhaust system and engine is not burning fuel at optimum levels, which translates to drop in fuel economy or high fuel consumption.
If you feel you are using more gas now compared to gas before the light then 02 sensor might be a problem.
Either way your car will not pass state inspection with the light still one.
Hope this helps.

Check the oil. Then, check the radiator-it may be low on fluid. It is amazing how much noisier the engine gets when the fluids are low. You might want to watch the fluid levels closely-there may be a leak in the radiator or a hose. Best of luck.
