How much pocket money is right?

When we were kids we were given a small amount of money as pocket money & we put most of it into our piggy banks hoping to collect a big sum. Today children in schools seem to be forever falling short of pocket money, coz there is the new Video game to be bought, there are weekend parties to attend, there are gifts to be exchanged, there are a 100 new Gizmos luring them, Should we then teach children to stop doing all that is in, or should we encourage them to think wisely before every penny that is spent. Better still should we link the amount of money they get to the effort they put in towards goals that you would have set up for them.

I am also pondering this question as mmy son is growing up and son he will be asking for daily allowance. I may do away with the allowance totally and give him money as and when he needs it. I feel that way may be I can keep a tab on his sendings and he can save from that only to spend whenever he wants. My mom had this system and we never took advantage of her. we asked her telling her the truth and she understood even if it was bunking classes to go to movies, she said it was part of college life as long as our performance never suffered she didn't stop us from anything. I think I will take the same road with my son too.

Children seem to "Know the price of everything and the cost of nothing". I think it is better for kids to earn their pocket money so they realise the hard work that is needed in the real world. Maybe if Half their money was earned they would work harder when they need more money. I think it is good to instill a work ethic into kids so they are prepared to work when they leave School/Home.
