Meat Market Hygiene

Hygiene standards in Mexico do not seem to be up to a reasonable level. When we first moved here, my wife went into a meat market to buy some roast lamb. The counter person was using the meat saw to cut raw pork, and without cleaning the equipment, he grabbed the cooked lamb and started cutting it. Laurel did not make a friend that day when she then refused to complete the purchase. How do you feel about this? Would you have purchased the lamb, that could have been contaminated by goodness knows what??? Do people in most other countries adhere to higher standards of hygiene when handling meat products? We have learned that this is not an isolated incident, but common behavior at local meat markets, many of which sell freshly roasted lamb or goat.

Bacteria is as bacteria does. This person remains in business. I wonder if that is because local people are immune to the bacteria from repeated exposure? Kind of gross to think about but how could they stay in business if everyone kept getting sick from their meat?

In our country it is even worse. If you visit the meat market in some places in our country, you will stop eating meat afterwards, because it would so inhygenic that you would vomit at once if you see how dirty the place is, it is because of those shop keepers who sell there and keep the place untidy and making it a breeding ground for all sorts of flies and bacteria. But not all places are like that in our place, some would be good.

i agree with what your wife did and would have done the same.. unfortunately im sure things like this happen all over the world.. its sad that so many do not take there jobs in this or other food industries seriously sometimes.. the worst thing is that cutting corners in this particular industry could prove to have harmful or even fatal impacts on the general public..personally??, of coure thank goodness she SEEN it happen here and was able to walk away.. but think about it, how many times do you think she bought it there before she saw what he did? in other words, just because you dont see you foods being handled missappropriately doesnt mean you shouldnt take precaution.. dont leave your health and wellbeing up to someone who makes an hourly wage.. people can make errors as well as some are just careless, so no matter what you see or DONT see, assume that its up to you, make sure you always wash and cook everything through before serving to yourself our family... its worth the extra time every time!

The butcher should be more sanitary, but really, he was cutting raw meat and then used the same knife to cut raw meat for your wife. Since the bacteria is destroyed during the cooking process, he probably really wasn't doing anything wrong. Raw lamb is not different than raw pork or beef. If he used it to cut cooked lamb, that's a whole other story!

You would probably freak out if you visited at USA slaughterhouse where a lot of the meat comes from...USDA approved facilities is a joke really...however it sounds appealing after hearing about Mexico...I suggest reading the book FAST FOOD NATION if you are interested in hearing about the slaughterhouse conditions and actually the immigrants who work in most of them...one day that guy you saw might be in one..ha...but anyway yes, that section of that book is very eye-opening

its not an isolated incident..i think its the same wherever you are..why not buy meat in the supermarket??? or buying to another vendor maybe hes diff from another or try to befriend him in that manner you could ask him to clean first the meat saw...if im in your shoes..i would ask the vendor in a nice way if he could wash/clean/wipe it off first before cutting a new one..

Pork then to lamb. It is disgusting. Both meats should not be sold at the same butcher shop.

My family and I have often visited Mexico for vactions. Thier meat preparations are far below our standards and should not be bought. a side of beef or pig is laid out each morning and cuts are made as they are ordered. I also my first visit came down with ameba dysentary, quite sick I was. But soon learned that if you are just an occasional visiter you must steer clear of localy grown fruits, vetables and animal products. I have had friends that worked in Mexico and thier bodies become climatized you might say and eventually these things no longer bother them. When we visit we are sure to visit US graded stores and resturants of which there are many. you might just need to do some research.

When I lived in Libya the meat vendors in the souks used to have meat hanging in the heat covered in flies and Arab people were buying it (he just shook the flies off and cut a portion of the meat). Thank heavens there were some modern stores and we could buy in the commissary.

I would definately have not bought the meat YUK But we have to understand one thing about certain countries, especailly those that are impoverished. They do not have the money to properly train and educate their people as we do. It makes for much more layed back laws and enforcement of certain standards of living. I know that when Im traveling out of the US I carefully watch whatever I eat or drink, You just have to cautious.
