Our new cats at my son's hamster

We have a new cat for 3 weeks now. He is very young and a great animal. A week ago he ate my son's hamster and I do not dare to tell my son about it. I don't know how to do that. I am afraid that my son is going to hate our new cat and I don't like that idea but at this point I have the feeling that I am betraing my son. How can I handle this problem?

If your son has not noticed that the hamster is gone in a weeks time just how attached was he ? I mean surely if he loved it that much he would have noticed by now .If he does not pay that much attention to a pet he does not need one and not sure he would be as upset as you think of it being gone .

My son did notice his hamster was gone. He was very nice and payed a lot of attention to the hamster. Het gave him food and water every two days. Cuddeled it and cleaned the cage once a week. Did you think he noticed it just a week later that the hamster was gone? Than you think wrong. He came out off school and noticed the empty cage. I told him I barried the hamster in the garden. I just couldn't tell him the cat ate his pet.

As said above, I would be concerned that in a week, your son has not noticed that his hamster has gone. I always believe that honesty is the best policy. You should explain to your son that most animals will chase smaller animals, and particularly that cats are attracted to rodents. The cat was only doing what was natural, though maybe there should be some apology on the part of the person who allowed the cat to be in the same room as the hamster. If your son understands that the cat was simply doing what comes naturally to it, then it should be fine. But as before, I would be more concerned that he doesn't appear to have noticed the absence of the hamster anyway.

I red my quistion again and I don't read anything about my son not noticing that his hamster was gone for a week. I just wrote that the cat at the hamster a week ago. He, as I wrote in my other responce was a very nice and tender hamster owner. That is why I couldn't tell him the truth becaurse he adorse the cat aswell. Thank you for your reaction anyway.

Always the truth, no matter what. Explain that it is a natural way for cats. That the hampster should have been confined better by the human taking care of it. That is where the problem was. Not the cat.

I know I must tell him the truth. The cage was still closed. The only part of the hamster what was left was his head and that part was still laying inside the closed cage. And we in our house allways take good care of our animals. That is what I learn my childeren aswell. I know there are people who are not worth pets but I can tell you they have a good home with us.
