Is anyone else getting tired of these broken English, juvenile, ignorant, halfass posts being inexcusably misspelled? I mean, come on! I'm no grammar or spelling nazi here, but take a little more time and actually spell out correct sentences, please!!! It won't take that much of your day and time to do so--quit throwing up sentence fragments like, "It true", and "Is you o k" That just makes the writer look greedy and uneducated. So Please, take the time to write coherently!!!!

Well there are people from all over the world here and some are here to imporve their english and spelling so maybe if you offered a little help for some of the ones that are really bad that would be a nice thing to do and you could make some good friends if you wanted too.

Right, but you can't really help total strangers or it is seen as rude. You have to expect at least some literacy to start with.

Unfortunately, this is very true. However, We might want to take into account that some people ARE uneducated as well as English being a 2nd or sometimes 3rd or more language to them. I don't really mind broken english, as long as it's somewhat readable.

I don't mind it as much either, as long as it also pertains to the subject at hand, and is not just ramblings for a response or a discussion. Because we are a multilingual community, and many people know only as much english as there is on their televisions or streets...

I dont mind it either. As long as the sentence could be understood, it is fine.

Not what I was referring to. I'm talking about mutilated posts that are hard to read because people are too greedy and lazy to write out at least one or two nice sentences.

As an English teacher, it really gets my goat. I can accept the American spellings of words, having had therapy to help me get over that, but agree that some of the efforts are just bone idle, lazy and ignorant. Fortunately, when I log on, I am actually quite impressed to see some wonderful discussions, with good grammar, vocab and sentence formation. I am surprised that so many people do still use their brains!

I must say that I do really enjoy a genuine effort from someone where English is not their first, or even second, language. The difficulties faced by someone trying to learn English are immense, because it is such a beautiful but often silly language. I have been lucky enough to have rsponses from such ends of the earth as Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, where the English was quite difficult to understand at first glance, but a quick look at the persons profile shows that they are genuinely trying to open a discourse with the world, and use English due to its status. I find this both flattering, and wonderful, and the contributors are well worth taking a second look at, and an effort put in. The rewards far outweigh the effort. As for those English and Americans who simply don't try, I could throttle them, though I do appreciate that in some cases, they may be new to the language themselves, some are just bleeding idiots, who should know better. I must say, this is never the case with your contributions.

I understand your frustration, but what you have to remember is that there are some people that are trying their best. Yes, there are the spammers and the cheaters, the copy and pasters, etc., but they are doing it on purpose. They don't care what they write, they just want to try to milk the system (unsuccessfully, I hope). But there are others, that are french, german, asian, indian, and arabian, etc, that are trying their best because english is not their primary language. I am a stickler for all things english, as I spent years editing people's work, but here on mylot, I refrain from lashing out at those that I know get better and better the more they try. Don't worry about the cheaters though, we have been working to get them out of here, and I am sure you have too.

I agree, but it's very easy to tell the difference between a post which has been written by someone for whom English is not their native language, and a person who speaks English but just will not take the time to write effectively. A non-English speaker may write: I know what mean you. The lazy English speak may write: I no wot u meen.

I have a little education on English. I try my best on Mylot to make clear sentences for people to read. I understand people meanings, but not to concern about spelling. But sometimes it os hard for me to understand the start discussion from some one else. I read the answere, I know later.

that is fairly true, but we also have to consider the time constraints and everything. i mean, we can't expect everybody to have the same dedication like you to check every single word they are typing.

No, I make my mistakes. We just need moderate or just fair literacy. I'm not asking for everyone to be an English major!

A lot of the time those people aren't capable of writing coherently. They are often from different countries and, despite how it clutters and detracts for us english speakers they insist on participating (perhaps when they aren't capable). Its all about money for a lot of people.

Very well said. Half the time I have no idea what these people are trying to say. I've seen some responses to discussions and I think 'what are you talking about'. We all make 'typos' at times but the majority of our discussions are coherent. Some people (a lot of people) give one word/one line answers and can't even string a single sentence together. It's very frustrating at times, especially when you also have to filter through the crap discussion topics like "what your favrit color?". Really, who's gives a sh*t what a complete stranger's favourite colour is? Sorry...just having a vent.

Lol good one...English test should be passed to become a member on myLot, I like the sound of that. Atleast then we won't have our blood boil reading half-eaten words and sentences. I even hate net-language like 'wat, tht, haft...' I mean come on, if you want to chat then go to a chatting room atleast spare our discussions...

This is the effect of chat rooms, most of people who came here are well known of that kind of communication. I use that that kind of writing only when i am in yahoo chat rooms or in a hurry to leave. Otherwise there is no reason to use such language. Poor knowledge of English can also be a reason for bad writing, not only from India, people from Philippines, Malaysia and China are also weak in English speaking (Not all though). I wont say that i know all the English grammar correctly, but at least i always try my best to avoid mistakes while writing. If someone tells me that particular word is misplaced or sentence building is faulty, then i will take it as a lesson to remember.

You are so right! I've only been on myLot a short time. I can deal with the broken English, especially if I bring up their profile and they are indeed from another country. I think some are pretty brave to post and risk ridicule. The ones I am having a hard time with are the ones speaking in darn cell phone text messaging language. I don't think it's appropriate here and its use should be banned here, unless myLot's use is not really what it is suppose to be.

You're so right, I'm danish myself, but i try to spell and do the grammar correctly. Of course you can't avoid typos, but it's easy to spot a typo from a lazy person. Now you might say "What about the people from other countries?", true, it's not their fault, and they shouldn't be mocked at, IF they actually seem willing to try and get it as understandable as possible. If they're just the lazy type, just typing away and not caring about reading through it, then it's really annoying. Then there's the people using "txt spk", now those are the worst! When i see someone saying something like "omg i fnk u r dmb", i just ignore them. I even asked one why they actively torture the english language, his response was that it's faster.. I don't get it! How can it possibly be faster!? I would take ages to type a simple sentence, how can they remember all those different ways to screw up a sentence, it seems impossible to most people with a decently functioning brain. That's my own little rant, just thought i had to contribute..

I agree. I don't expect everyone on this site to be a grammar professional. I wouldn't dare ever claim to be one myself. However, it is not that difficult to take the time to actually spell out all the words you're using. Not to mention the amount of time it would save the members trying to understand your posts. Coherent english makes everyone's lives easier. And personally, it would take me longer to type butchered english, than it would to just spell everything out correctly.

I hope you realize that are large portion of the MyLot population are not American or British. Since English isn't their primary language it's a little hard to express themselves. The only thing that I really do not like is the plagarism that is rampant in MyLot.

Infact, no once cares if the reader can judge what it is, so I dont think that we should waste time on such little things, however ur point is soooo valuable, infact I have a solution "Spell check anywhere" is a program through which u can use spell check feature every where, even here too !!!
