You would want to vary the cover letter slightly according to the specific job you are applying for. Try to somehow fit the job description in to the cover letter. Think brief, to the point and memorable - paragraph one: an intro; paragraph two: why you are right for the job; paragraph three: a call to action. In paragraph two you would explain why you are qualified for the job at hand. Let's say the job description includes working over a group of people. "Must work well with large groups" Reiterate that while still telling them something not on the resume! So I might say "As the oldest of eight children learning to work with a wide variety of personalities and skill sets is something I do naturally." If you have theatre experience you might say "Working under pressure and with fast deadlines is something I often did while _____". Whatever the job description is - you want them to know YOU are the one who can fullfill that. Good luck!

Very good advice. A lot of people can bluff their way through getting the job, if you've got the confidence you can do this, but I always think honesty is the best policy. The letter is about 'selling' yourself. Even if you have no experience you can expand on your 'talents' and that you are for example a hard conscientious worker. Good luck with the letter and success in the job hunting.

I have read what everyone has written to you Smugger, and I couldn't have said it better. Yes, you should follow examples and guidelines, and "sell" yourself. Sometimes, if they do not like your cover letter, they will not hire you. So be sure to write everything necessary to getting the job, and do not mention irrelevant data. Be completely professional without comprimising your own beliefs and self. And be the person that leaves a lasting impression, sometimes all you have is your first impression. Also, I can't stress enough how important it is for you to fully explain why YOU are right for the job. It is so important. P.s. I find it interesting that you call it covering letter, and we call it cover letter, in the U.S.
