Do you think that Neo had to die in the cause to save the world????

I feel that Killing neo and trinity at the end was something real harsh. Though it shows that Neo has returned to his source, he is a human in anyway. So why wasnt he let alone and go back home victorious?????And to make the things worst, they had to kill trinity too, so that it could be established that Neo was nothing without trinity and he therefore needed to die anyway. Ifeel that it was unnecessary. What do you think???
