Yes I know pencil shading but I don't know its technical terms as I am a self-taught artist. One thing I like the most is that using dark pencil like 6b and then spreding it with paper towel or paper napkin. That gives very good effect specially in backgroung.

you can try cross-hatch techniques, or scribbling. i think scribbling is actually my favorite technique!!! it is fun, and free, and loose, but gives such lively results!

I used to sketch alot. The best way to start is to get a good set of actual sketching pencils. You can buy them at an art supply store, most craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby, or even at a Walmart. These pencils are used for sketching and shading. They have different courseness and the leads are softer and harder (depending on what you are doing). Then I suggest just expirementing with shading, start out small like with a ball. Shine a light on it and draw this ball, shading in the areas that are darker and putting in shadows.
Once you have the whole idea down and know what you are doing, try a portrait. Maybe look at one that is already done in pencil for your first time and go from there. They also sell books on "How To". Good luck!
