Referrals...How to go about getting lots of them apart from owning a website?

I've been looking for ways to make money online, like a lot of you out there and I've noticed that with a lot of the programs out there that referrals is a very popular and good way to make money. Now what I would like know is how one would go about getting lots of referrals without owning your own website? Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Referrals do help but they are not the main earner most of the time. You have to do that yourself.
Referrals in the HYIP market can earn you a lot if you are lucky in attracting a big spender.
Some programs I have been in a long time I have over 1,000 referrals BUT only about 30 are active at any one time.
The charts you see of a pyrimid of active referrals earning you millions are pure theory.

From all I've read the way to make the most money is referrals! from what I'm getting from here is that its not the amount of referrals you get its who sticks around!?!?

Without your own online presence, referral will be very
hard, on the other hand start to work it out with your classmates, officemates, close neighbors, and start getting
acquaintaces from family reunions or routine barbeque party.
