The best entry level motorcycle?

What I'm looking for is an affordable, reliable, motorcycle to purchase as my first. It's something I want to use as my everyday vehicle. It can be standard, cruiser, or even a different type, just offer justification for your choice.

My husband bought a 650 off/on road dirt bike for his work vehicle. Gas is super cheap and not only can he drive it back and forth to work legally, he can also take it off road which is something we do in the area we live. Most outdoor activities include hunting, fishing, four wheeling, motorcycle riding, etc... This is one reason he chose a dirt bike. Also, insurance is SOOO cheap. It costs us only $17 a month for FULL COVERAGE! Can't beat that! Although, I guess it depends on the area you live in. If you are in a big city, I guess it would look kinda weird! :)
