Phone or instant messenger?

What do you prefer and why? I like instant messaging because I can have longer (free) talks with my friends and I can send them pictures and music at the same time but the fact the I can't hear their voice (I'm not talking about using microphones) does have disadvantages because we get so many cues from the tone of voice of the other person and sometimes you can get completely the wrong end of the stick.
