Why is breastfeeding so offensive to some people?

I am very curious.....First let me tell you where I stand....I am a mother of 4.....I have two older children, of which I didn't have the desire to breastfeed, so they were fed formula....I have two under the age of 3, whom I chose to breastfeed, for as long as I could stand it, which was about 3 1/2 months for both. Now I do know a few things that I can attribute to my kids being breastfed....my two older kids who go to school daily, are sick a lot less than my two younger ones .....infact, I have yet to have my two younger ones to the Dr. for an earache....also, two times they had to go to the dr's because my daughter had strep throat, and the dr. wanted to see everyone. They (the two little ones) are very healthy, the two older ones have seen their share of sickness. Also the two big ones....are just that....big ones!! They overweight, my two younger ones are right on target for their age, with no excess weight. I attribute these two facts to breastfeeding...just my opinion and analysis.
So my discussion is this.......Why do people get offended of breasfeeding, in public, at home, dr's office? It is free milk for your baby, security for your baby, can be done very discreetly, keeps your baby calmer...healthier for your baby, and I think it keeps them more content.
I have read several articles and heard news on tv, and internet that several woman have been made to stop breastfeeding on a plane, train, etc. now I can see someone getting upset if a breast was exposed, but from what I gathered these woman were discreet, but you can only be discreet in exposing yourself, no matter how discreet you try to be someone looking at you, knows what your doing, and this bothers them.....Why....help me to try to see some others views!
I like to hear what people think.....I dont judge....to each his own I believe!

An excellent discussion you have started.
I am a old man, age 52.
What you said is perfectly correct.
I am youngest in my brothers and sisters.
My mother too fed me for four years when I was young.
Because of short gaps between my other brothers and sisters she fed them for a year or even less than that and some times could not do at all.
The difference is exactly same as you have said.
I am the only healthy son of my mother for last 52 years.
I recomond all the young mothers to listen you!

I'm not sure why it offends people so much. Of course, my mother's generation was taught that formula was better for children.. thankfully they realize that isn't true anymore. I find it happens with any generation of people though. My father doesn't like for me to nurse my son when we go visit, to the point that I go into another room and cover up because it just makes him that uncomfortable. Now, I will accomidate my father because it is his house, and I do not wish to be disrespectful to him, but I refuse to hide somewhere at the mall to nurse, I cover up, but I don't hide somewhere.

Some people are closed-minded, immature, and stupid. People like that stay in a little cubby hole the rest of their life and get nowhere.

I think it should not be offensive to anyone because it is natural but some people (especially young men) can feel a bit embarassed. Respect 4 you 4 having 4 kids ;)

I dont think so they should be offended on that whether it is on public or at home, if the mother is breasfeeding her baby then whats wrong with that? I dont see any thing wrong with that maybe those who are being offended on that is they have a very narrrow mind and just thinking about their feelings and wants without thinking the need of the baby to be feed.
