How many of you actually celebrate Valentines day?

As I see the stuff coming out on the shelves for Valentine's Day it made me wonder how many people actually do celebrate it? I personally have always disliked it because it's a holiday that forces the "significant other" to bear gifts and such. If my man appreciates me he should show me once in a while on his own, not out of obligation of what's "correct" to the rest of the world. While I 'celebrate', it's at a minimum.. basically buying each of my kids something small for the day.

lol.. not everybody! some religions don't allow it some people just simply don't bother I fall in the latter category, I just don't like it when someone else tells my loved on to make me feel special. When he does it on his own, THAT is special to me.

I agree - when someone really love you, they will express that when they want to - it doesn't have to be on Feb. 14th

I don't have anyone to celebrate it with as of yet, or else I would definitely do something very special. I understand your dislike of the day, and I know that many feel this way, but to me love is the most beautiful thing in the world and I think that we should celebrate it every single day of our lives ^_^ So to have even one day where we are reminded to show our love, to me is an amazing and beautiful thing ^_^ I just wish that I had someone to share it with! LOL ^_^

I have long gone past the stage of celebrating Valentine's day. I might make something special for my husband's dinner and if I remind him and do a bit of moaning, I may get a box of chocolates. We don't bother with flowers or cards, as I feel at this stage of our lives, it is a waste of money.

I did n't fall in love yet but celebrate a bit Valentines day with my faimly members. I know some information about Valentines day which i want to share with u. Valentine's Day falls on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine's cards, candy, or donations to charities, often anonymously. It is very common to present flowers on Valentine's Day. The holiday is named after two men, both Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines". Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide.

the sad part is... a hand made card would say so much more, cost so much less and truly be unique! Oh well! I prefer the old age ways of celebrating love!

Sounds like a very smart girl! I do the same with my teens... we either have a cookie cake or cupcakes or something to celebrate together and I generally get them something small.

I enjoy the Holiday and celebrating it. But never have gotten really all good feeling and loved on that day. I also disappoint myself, thinking maybe that this year would be different, but it never has been. But I don't know why I keep liking it and wanting it to be different each year.

David & Mary - Me and my husband.
I love valentine's day but it has often been a lonely time for me. However, my husband proposed to me on Valentine's Day in 2002. We went out to a lovely dinner. After dinner we went to his house to watch TV. I was wondering and wondering because I knew he had the ring. We were watching the Valentine Day version of Everybody Loves Raymond, and during the commercial he gave me the ring and proposed. It was really romantic even if you don't think it sounds like it, but you have to understand my husband. :-) Don't worry, I don't understand him completely either.

I'm making gift baskets for my family, friends and coworkers. Here's a sample: Valentine Bark Any assortment of Valentine's candy can be used in this recipe with great results - message hearts, cream filled chocolate hearts and small cinnamon hearts. 1 pound white chocolate, semisweet chocolate, or milk chocolate 2 cups assorted Valentine's Day candy Line a large jellyroll pan with parchment or wax paper and set aside. Melt the chocolate in a large heavy saucepan over very low heat or in a microwave, stirring frequently until the chocolate is smooth and melted. Spread the melted chocolate evenly on the prepared pan. Sprinkle the candy evenly over the chocolate and press the candy into the chocolate to make sure it will not fall out later. Set aside the chocolate to cool. Once the chocolate has set, break into small pieces. Store the bark in a tightly sealed container at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Wrap the candy in plastic wrap or brightly colored cellophane and tie into small bundles with bright ribbon for gift giving. Add a special tag or Valentine to each little bundle. Makes about 1 1/2 pounds candy.

Sounds yummy! THIS is how I choose to celebrate too... not with huge gifts and crazy nights filled with spending money and putting on a front. If we are in love, we are in love 365 days a year, not just one! I love this idea! Thanks for sharing!

We don't celebrate it for relgious reasons for one, but I like getting the candies on half price after the holiday LOL. My son hates the day because he was married on that day forever so he thought until he became injured on the job, totally disabled and his wife or rather ex wife now had an affair, left him because he was disabled and she wanted someone who was strong and could work. She got the kids to and now trying to take them to South Africa and he is not agreeing, if she goes she will be kidnapping them. She has a place to stay free for as long as she wants at her new inlaws place.

I used to when it was romantic thing to do now there are valentine cards for practically every person in your life. It way past roses or candies and I for one do not like what commercialism has done to it.

It is funny how they do have them for everyone, let's gather one for the postman and the hairdresser, your step parent, your real parent, your kids, your lover, your ex lover.. lol

I with my girlfriend celebrate it simbolically, sure I don't buy a gift purposely for this festivity that in fact is only much consumeristic!

very well said! to do so symbolically means so much more than falling into the rut of buying stuff like everyone expects

My wife and I don't bother anymore, we just don't see the point. My wife knows every day of the year how much I love her, I don't need a dozen roses, a box of chocolates, and an oversized card one day out the year to affirm that love.

but don't forget to let her know on 'other' days of the year! never take for granted that she knows.. sometimes it's nice to be told and reminded how much you're loved!

V-Day is just another Hallmark holiday. I've never been a huge fan, nor will I ever be. I don't need a day to show my lover how I feel about them. I'm sure it's a "nice thought," but no thanks. (I am guilty of giving out stuffed animals and candy on Feb 14th though...doh!)

I think the most non-conforming of us can be found guilty at some point of our life! Don't feel too bad! I think perhaps when we're young it is something that we feel obligated to participate in. As we get older and perhaps wiser we realize that nobody should dictate one day to tell the person you love that you love them and adorn them with gifts.

Try not to get involved to much since i think it's all a commercial scam! but it's hard to stay out from it, if you want to fitt in with the rest of the knuckleheads. So i have to admit that i've bought my share of roses during the years!

lol... it's a definte thing that I cover when I'm with someone... I just simply tell them... write me a poem on that day and surprise me another day with something special that says I love you But I do feel for you guys though because no matter what we ladies say you guys get bamboozled into feeling like you MUST celebrate! LOL Sorry!
