Side Effects of Hypothyroidism

In 1999 I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and began a treatment of the drug Levothyroxine. I noticed that before my diagnosis my hair had started to become quite thin and I assumed that once treatment commenced that my hair would return to normal. This has not been the case, and I am concerned that within a few years I will be completely bald. I know I can always buy a wig, but other than that has anyone had success in treating this side effect of hypothyroidism?

Heart disease and its associated complications are the most serious side effects of an underactive thyroid. However, hypothyroidism has important implications throughout the body. Here are some of the more common effects of an under-producing thyroid gland...... Heart disease, Poor Circulation, Increased Susceptibility to Infection, Depression and Mental Confusion. Other Thyroid-Related Problems are.... Decreased heart rate and cardiac output, Increased weight (pot belly), Pain where the ribs meet the sternum, Memory loss, Unexplained crying, Morning headaches and dizziness, Loss of hair, especially outside of eyebrows, Constipation, Ringing in the ears, Allergies A frog-like husky voice, Muscular sluggishness and weakness.

I do not suffer from hypothyroidism, but I did for awhile have thinning hair. You do not state if you are male or female, but I sense that you probably are female, especially since this is more often diagnosed in women. I would make sure to take a good multi vitamin, and extra C,and E. When my husband was ill with ALS this was the vitamin therapy, plus either cod liver oil or A and D supplements. His symptoms did not alleviate, but his hair got thicker, grew faster, and so did his nails. I also noticed that when I started taking Black Cohosh (for menopausal symptoms) my hair got thicker. Black Cohosh does support healthy thyroid as well. Good nutrition always makes a big difference. It just takes awhile to see the effects.

Thanks GardenGerty. I agree with you about the importance of good nutrition in your diet. I do take a multi-vitamin and several other supplements every day including the Omega 3-6-9 oils. I have never used Black Cohosh, but will do some research to see what I can learn.
