Yes, I do think it's possible because the man I am now married to was a man I only corresponded with in the begining...We finally met in person after a few months.
I fell in love with his words, thoughts, and idea before ever laying eyes on him and maybe there is something good about starting this way..Physical attraction can get in the way of your thinking when you first meet..By talking for a while and getting to know each other before seeing either other maybe is a key to finding the person who is really compatible...
I think this is becoming less and less strange and more and more common thanks to computers and the internet...

I married my husband after talking to him on the computer and corresponding with letters and many phone calls.

I have experienced this also. It was a long distance relationship that went on for 8 months until we met. If and when you meet, it might seem different because you will be interacting face to face. I found it easier to carry on a relationship using IM and phone calls. There was not as much reality to it.
I don't think you can totally know a person without being around them for some time. Yes, it happens frequently. No, it is not strange at all. It is a beginning that helps the process of deciding to meet in person.
