I have never had a loss of communication skills as such (although I am a shy person these days), but I have more problems with my memory.
I have found this to be things that are important like remembering to make medical appointments, take my medicine and so on, which is rather frustrating.

Not communication skills, but motor (small and large) skills. I'm clumsy, so I started to take dancing lessons, this helps a lot because you have to concentrate on the muscles and I bump into less things now. I also started guitar lessons for the same reason, to practice the muscles of my hands and also to help with concentration. I think it is more the side effects of the medicines - I also have terrible headaches, constantly.

My problem is sometimes when I'm carrying on a conversation I'll go totally blank on the word I was going to use. My neurologist says it's because of the seizures I've had over the years.

Oh my communication skills suck.It has alwez been that way. After my first seizure and epilepy diagnosis the only change that i could see in me was my memory loss thingy. I could alwez remember the past. I had a very sharp memory. The past is still very clear, but the immediate memory alwez gets eraed somehow. Like I forget what i have to do today, but I can remamber what exactly happened a week ago, exactly means i can find the amount of change that a random common shopping fetched me and what the name of the cashier lady was that was printed on the bill which i only looked at for the purpose of getting the raffle coupons.

The memory loss could be a combination of both the seizures and the medication. Having a seizure is like pressing "ctrl+alt+del" on a p.c. Some data may be lost or corrupted during the reboot! ;-)
It can be very frustrating but I've found that playing games that stretch and test my memory or data processing abilities help to keep my mind sharp.

That's a great idea. I do that to some extent, I have always enjoyed sudoku, and some mind games. I also knew an elderly woman who kept her memory by citing the alphabet backwards, listing every president, and mind games that she made up like that.

Yes, I have noticed it. I have been told that it is because of the medication. I am on Dilantin (400mg/day).

I just happened to be researching Topamax and Lamictal online before coming here tonight. From what I've seen so far, many of our meds cause communication and memory problems. Try looking up your particular med to see it's possible side effects. 2 sites that I have found to be extremely helpful are epilepsyfoundation.org and epilepsy.org
