What this error message means is that the Computer cannot mount your hard drive, it literally cannot get it to work.
First thing you should do is to run an anti-virus simply to ensure it is not a boot sector virus which is your problem, if it is not then you need to replace the boot sector on your hard drive.
Use a win98 boot disk (mostly because all of the tools it uses fits on one floppy disk) and load it, when it has finished loading the tools try the following:
Fdisk/MBR
If that fails then you need to completely remove the partition on your hard drive using Fdisk and then reformat the HD. If this does not work, check the manufacturer of your Hard Disk on line as they may have a low-level formatting tool on their website for your drive.
Using such a tool will remove all the data on the drive but at least it should be usable again and you can from there reformat and re-install.
Good luck

I guess this the best that can be done to bring back the HDD. If resetting the MBR with fdisk /mbr of hard disk doesn't solve, the last resort would be to repartition it. If again, repartitioning is not possible then please change the hard drive. It could have been damage due to power surge/spike or mechanical failure, which is only in the hands of the manufacturer...

I agree with the chkdsk /R method - if this shows no results run a hd diagnosic program from the manufacturer of the drive. It is likely the Hd has developed errors

This error may be caused by your corrupted operating system or a bad sector in your hard disk. In any case try to format it using a bootable XP cd installer. Now if your on the middle of formatting your pc and it suddenly stop and could not continue, it may be caused by a bad sector in your hardisk. In this case i suggest you change your hardisk. I hope this helps in a way. Good Luck.

generaly caused by hard disk failures or bad scetors.
and it can be about bad IDE cable.
try to change the IDE with the one connecting ure CDrom drive.
if u still getting the message, change the hard disk if u have another one or take it to a technician
