There's been a lot of talk lately about obesity in our society. Is having an obese child make you an abusive parent? Is giving your kids donuts and candy bars and McDonalds constantly constitute child abuse?

this is a very good topic to discuss, I feel that if the obesity is caused by an unhealthy diet and life style then yes the parents are to blame, should be charged with child abuse. As parents it is our responsibility to make sure that our children are properly cared for and that includes making sure they eat right and excersize. However if the obesity is caused by a thyroid disorder, steroids, ect it should be up to a doctor to say if the parents properly cared for the child, or if the disorder caused the excess weight gain.

I totally agree - I have never thought of it as a form of child abuse, but that is an interesting way to look at it!! Parents should be held responsible for their children being extremely unhealthy but not if it is medical condition.

have you not watched honey we're killing the kids??? feeding children CRAP ensures they have a shorter life span... if you want your kids to be healthy you have to feed them healthy food at regular intervals and make sure they have regular exercise otherwise you are killing your kids and it counts as child abuse!!!

If your child's obesity is a direct effect of her lifestyle, yes. As parents, it is our responsibility to make sure our children grow up healthy and safe. Feeding a child junk food constantly is not healthy. However, if a childs obesity is an effect of a medical related issue, then no. The eating habits that you establish from infancy will be carried onto adulthood.
