Ive been watching the news on tv today and the big issue of the day has been government attempts to cut carbon emissions. All the talk has been about air flight, but far more people drive cars and this huge poison wasnt mentioned. When someone wants to kill themselves a good way is to put a pipe on the car exhast and run it in to the car and leave the engine running. In other words cars do no one any good, why isnt getting rid of this beast of our roads being discussed seriously? it costs us all millions in hospital payments and other medical bills, kills more than smoking but has never been seriously questioned, why is this?/??????????

To take oil out of the equation would mean less money for some people. In the beginning when Henry Ford started designing cars they were run on ethanol - a byproduct of corn. At the time it was too expensive to do this and they changed to oil because it was cheaper. Why not go back to ethanol. Cars are already designed to handle this.

thank you, yes im sure money is behind it at one level but i also think the western middle class have got away with it for so long they will fight tooth and nail to protect their position, see answer number1 they cant even tollerate the debate without ridicule

i do not intend to be snide, you hold a particular point of view that stands as legitimate, this is the first time we have managed to hold a debate of any kind on this issue because it does make some people very uncomfortable that we are even talking about it

gars have been a source of constant emission of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere a solution will just be to purify the waste product of cars

Sadly, Esk
It's because of the non-existance of a Profit Motive or Clear and Apparent Danger to do so...
The industry's grip on our collective throats (literally, now that many throat-closing breathing deseases can be directly traced to auto-emissions) has consistantly been tightented by the maintaining of an indulgent and lazy Market...
The buyers of autos and the like have been convinced that, even with the high tolls of human life, that there is no better way...
Pish, Tosh! I say to them! There is a better way and there are workable solutions to this and a whole lot of problems...
Please feel free to visit my profile... I've just added an entry titled " Am I The Only One Who Knows About The Venus Project?"
This and more "solutions" are consistantly being swept into a deep, dark corner and keep away from the eyes of people who do really care...
I bid you Peace and as always, wish you and yours the very best...
May Blessings Abound for Thee....

Just a little (oh I rate this) correction, cars maybe the end of human race on earth (I disagree, I think that they may cause a lot of problems, may help on dramatic climate changes, but a few thousand, perhaps a million or so humans will survive, thinking the worst possible cenario), but even if cars, or better pollution, causes the end of human race, earth will continue and life will, somehow, continue.

There are too many cars. I know that some are necessary, but not everybody in the world needs to drive a car.
Too many cities are designed with cars in mind, so it's impossible to get around without one. That has to change in a big way if we are going to be able to continue living on this planet.

yes clearly that is the case, what we want for our comfort has become confused with what we need for our life

The reason motoring must not be questioned is that it is sacred. Or at least it is treated that way. 30,000-40,000 people are killed every year in auto accidents, but it is hardly ever addressed as a problem. It is estimated that 6000 of these fatalities are caused by phone use while driving.
People love their cars and you have to give the people what they want. People like to drive agressively and if they kill someone it is treated as an accident that could not have been prevented.
But, in the not too distant future there will no more cheap gas and there just won't be as many people who can indulge in the luxury of motoring.
There is no viable substitute that can replace all of the cheap fuel we enjoy currently. Not hydrogen, not ethanol, not biodiesel.
So make sure you don't live 20 minutes drive from the grocery store.

exactly right my friend, sooner or later people will have to adjust their lifestyle not just refuse to hold a debate because it is uncomfortable

ok no one is saying they are the only problem, just the largest one. Do you really believe the oil companies will allow a switch over to electricity just so people can continue breathing? i doubt it

Actually in case your cave hasnt got the latest state of the art tv signals, governments have been forcing vehicle manufacturers to develop alternative cars for many years. You cannot change things overnight, much to the chagrin of the environmentalists. The change would be more of a disaster than the results of the environment changes. Have you notices how many options there are being put fort for alternative clean fuels, and if something besides gas wasnt used, where do you think you would be able to fuel up with the options available today? How many gas stations would close because no one buys gas? How many people would be unemployed because no one buys gas? No, you have to do it gradually and let the rest of the supporting services catch up. Yes the government has been moving forward, finally, and yes there are changes being made, finally, and I expect that in 20 yrs we will all be using 100% electric cars without any pollution. But no one will lose their jobs doing it. Its moving, yes too slowly I agree, but it's moving, we will survive and it wont be long now when the progress will begin reversing the tradegies if the last 100 years.

sitting here in my cave, i smell poluted air as selfish people go shopping and each take one child to school in a car designed for 8, these are the individuals we should be clearing off the road. And why are gas sellers protected, we dumped thousands of coal miners without bothering what they were going to do later.

It's not just gas sellers. Thousands of jobs would be affected. People who work (directly or indirectly) in the automotive industry, car salesmen, delivery men, couriers, truckers, police, and other emergency personnel would all be directly affected. You couldn't ban cars but keep ambulances and such on the road because there wouldn't be enough money (no gas tax) to maintain the roads. Even the mail would have to go back to a "pony express" type of method. Then there are all the indirect ripples that would occur... the economic impacts alone are staggering to think about.

seriously .. even i hv been thinking about that ....but hero honda brings a good news.. they research & development team has come up with a brilliant idea of a car that runs on water & nt petrol.. that would be the cleanest car on earth.. i think it already in the market.. atleast ppl should start buying this car so that one day there would be no pollution.. if u havnt heard trucks and other heavy vehicles run on LPG in delhi .. this is a very good step towards solving the serious issue.. well even cars should be made to run on LPG if every1 cannot afford hero honda H2O... what do u think ?

Well carbon emissions have been going down DRASTICALLY since the 70's, so what more can be done to stop the alleged "warming"?

Aeroplanes are the top of the agenda because they have so far, got away without being taxed for carbon emissions. But, the harm they do is far worse than we suspect, because they inject their wastes right into the upper atmosphere where the maximum damage is done.
Our way of lifeall around the globe just about...relies on getting from
Aa to B by road, using a vehicle. We all pay taxes, and the systems exist to change tax rates at short notice. This will increasingly happen over time. But getting a financial grip on aeroplanes is much more difficult, so at the moment more important.
Actually the not so humble burger that produces all these fat Americans is also responsible for huge amounts of ozone depleteing carbon monoxide and dioxide from the vast herds of digesting cattle. If we didn't need so many, then perhaps the Amazon rain forest need not be cut down to make way for so many new farms.

I think all people around the world need a car because is the best way to mobilizate, and yes you have the reason about the pollution but take it easy because the enterprise that make cars they start to make a cars that no make pollution

just keep to think that the car is not the trigger of the end of the world. the end of the world is the GOD's rights. not the car. simply, in this case, the car is so valuable for mobile activity besides its bad risk (i mean pollution and traffic jam). the thing that we have to do is to prevent the risk that can we do and try to find out the best way to minimize the risk. just pray to GOD to give more wealthness and healthness to us and the entire of the world.

I think it is frivolous to worry about such things. They are only signs of the coming end times. When the Rapture happens, the world will be left behind and we need no longer concern ourselves with such things.

yes you are right it is the fault of selfish human beings, but they dont even like us having a debate , for example read some of the bile from the pro car lobby who consider it maddness that we should even ask the question. They have for years kept this idea of the agenda because even the debate scares them

after we deplete all of our natural resources we will go back to riding horses and buggies. That will be a slap in the face. That is why the goverment needs to help now to make sure that we dont kill the earth and will preserve our resources longer.
