It just depends on who is giving the massage. I like a hard massage between my shoulder blades but soft is nice as well. Oil is good. I don't care much for lotion. Never tried powder, but I can't imagine that I would like it.

Soft with oil, Summer gives me and my husband massages in our house. She is so awesome and I could just fall asleep while she's doing it.

It all depends for me on how I may be feeling on that particular day.. I've had days where my muscles are so sore, or even where there is a knot in my back or even in my neck.. And the only way to work it out is by pressing a little bit harder on the area..
I've had times though when my other half has given me a massage.. And he ended up putting to much pressure on a specific area that I may have had a knot in.. And he ended up actually damaging the area.. I actually had woken up one time where I could barely move because of the pain I was in.. He ended up damaging my arm because of the rough massage that he had given..
That now occasionally sometimes I will feel a pain in my arm.. Or even feel pain in the exact area where he had put to much pressure on it..
So I recommend to anyone to make sure that whomever is massaging you doesn't put to much pressure.. Because it can actually damage your tissue.. Especially if one is to apply a downward pressure on the area..
But I like when someone is giving me a massage that is on the soft side.. I find it to be a lot more relaxing.. My other half tends to use body lotion when massaging me.. But I find that when massage oils are used, that it's more beneficial.. As well that the benefits are improved as well.. I love massage oils that have a really nice scent to them.. One that is light on the skin.. I find the smell of the massage oil helps me to relax, not only in general.. But it helps to relax my muscles as well.
Massages I've found are a great stress reliever! And if the person know's what they are doing it can even be more of a wonderful experience! . .
