Superstar soccer player (um, footballer) has signed to play in the U.S. for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. If you're outside the U.S., are you sad to see him leave Europe? If you're in the U.S., would you watch him on TV or pay to see him in person?

Actually, Beckham can leave the country for good. I don't care. He's an over-paid half-wit who knows nothing else but running after a ball. We're not exactly talking 'brain drain' here. ;)

If he's a half-wit, he'll have to compete for media attention with other half-wits such as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton! Supposedly Spears upped the ante by trying to hang herself in rehab and declaring that she was the antiChrist. Beckham's gonna have to work hard to top that!

For some reason soccer will never catch on here. They've brought other stars to play in the US including Pele, arguably the greatest futbol player ever. That didn't exactly cause a frenzy... I do watch the world cup stuff, but rarely give it a glance any other time of the year! I don't doubt that they will sell out games here in LA, only because there are so many people! I also think that it is an ethnic sport, which really shouldn't decide its popularity, but I think it does to some extent!

I went a few times to see the NY Cosmos back in the day, when they had Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, and Giorgia Chinaglia. Soccer is huge now among youth, but I still don't see that translating into fannies in the seats at MLS games. To me U.S. interest in soccer is still limited to parents watching their kids play, and to World Cup and Olympics loyalties.

Do you know how much of the $250 million is actually salary, and how much is endorsements, etc.? I haven't heard this.

At first I thought Becks was 13, then I heard 34. I forget how old Pele was, and don't remember how much he got paid. He may have been closer to 40. But Beckham has the name. I'm not a big soccer fan so I really can't name many other soccer superstars--maybe Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, that's about it.

If Beckhams going then he must be taking Victoria with him, and in my book that is a good thing. Adios Posh and Becks

Is that because you don't like him as a soccer player, or don't care for the celebrity circus surrounding him & Posh? Is he seen by many as a greedy overpaid star?

No, i just don't like posh. Becks is a really good football player, although don't believe anyone needs that sort of money. Also the horrible media obsession with them (in the UK at least) is just annoying

Thanks for answering. I can understand your annoyance with Posh; in the U.S. it's always 'Paris Hilton this' and 'Britney Spears that,' every friggin' day. They get a lot more press coverage than the war in Iraq.

He's friends with Tom Cruise, so who knows, maybe he and Posh will be in a movie together. Or at least a reality TV series. ;-)

A showman might be just what the u.S. game needs to bring it some attention and buzz. He has to play well to create that kind of buzz, though.

If it brings more publicity to soccer in the US, I am all for it. I think it's a great sport and I love what it does for children who learn to play sports. So if it brings this sport into a bigger light in the US, like it deserves, yay for Beckham - encourage the US to get in board and become bigger fans of a great sport.

O I wish they were gone! The hype surrounding those 2 is unreal, i mean really, if he wasn't as good looking as he is they wouldn't have anywhere near the amt of publicity and money they have not....at least Posh should have a good selection of salad bars to choose from over there in L.A.!!

i think it would be good if he leaves totally, coz i think he the most over rated player in the game today. Bsides i dont think that he would be able to make much difference in the US football

I'm in the US, and I'm not a big soccer fan; I prefer baseball and football. I can't believe his contract is worth about $50 million per year. Major League Soccer must be counting on him to attract more fans to soccer here in America.

David Beckhakm is in his twlight of his career, it may be a good choice for him to go to the US, firstly, he can get lucrative contract, secondly ,he can also get the chance to be in Hollywood and it may also help his wife. May be for those who are outside the US, it is sad, because we may get less chance to watch him playing, also the move means he will never get back to the England national team, and he will never be the captain again. We will not see him become the English hero in the crucial moment.

I'm looking forward to seeing him play, I hope he's still got a good amount of talent left in him.

I'm not sad to see him leaving.. Cuz' here in Europe everybody knows Beckham as The King Of Free Kicks and great shooting and passes.. and i think he wants to make the soccer bigger in the states. Here in Europe, soccer is the most popular sport of all.. so i'm glad for him to go on make in the states..

I hope he stays healthy and can make an impact... he's getting a lot of money and it would be a shame if he's injured or otherwise not able to play at a high level.
