I think 8 is the average ammount of sleep everyone should get, but I hear it's more recommendable sleeping at least a couple of hours more. So that's what I do because I have the time to do, I give myself at least 10 hours of sleep per day and it helps me a lot in facing yet another day :)

you could sleep more than 8 hours. but you will actually feel more tired. your body will get so used to lying and sleeping for more than that, and you will feel lazy. I only get between 6-8 hours a sleep and I feel great in the morning. but if i sleep for like 12 hours or so then wake up, i feel like crap. I read something about sleep before. but i can't quite explain very well.

Some need less sleep, some more. So for some it would be not only okay, it would be essential to sleep more than 8 hours per day.
But every person has reserves and can go with less sleep for hours and days together, which unfortunately may not be very good for the body.
For me, I need my 8 hours of beauty sleep!

It really depends on the person. Some people can train themselves to get by on 4 hours a night and function fine, others require a full eight. Everyone is different. Try sleeping different lengths of time and see how you feel. If you sleep too much though it will just end up making you tired.
