What would you do if you saw a bug at a resteraunt?

Roach - this is a funny little cartoon picture of a roach.

A few weeks ago my husband and I were eating at our favorite chinese resteraunt when I notice a "water bug" or roach of some kind on the wall beside our booth. Of course I jumped a little when I noticed it but I didn't want to cause a scene. I couldn't finish eating even though I know the place isnt dirty. We quietly got up and paid and then mentioned that there was a bug and told them they might want to clean it up and get the place checked out. Do you think we did the right thing? What would you have done?

Yes, what you did was very diplomatic, and I would imagine that the restaurant owners were grateful to you for not causing a scene and losing them business. I would have thought he could have made some gesture of thanks by reducing your bill by 10% or something, but if you didn't mention the bug until after you paid for the meal, then I suppose the transaction would have taken place and the till closed. The bug may have been just a bug from outside somewhere, or one that crawled in through the air conditioning. Maybe, if it was a water bug, it came from a fish tank in the restaurant as these are often evident in Chinese establishments. These things happen, but I can imagine your horror and the feeling you got inside when you spotted it, especially if it WAS a roach. Yuck, I hate roaches. I think I would have felt quite sickly. I do applaud you on the way you handled the situation. You were very thoughtful and tactful about the whole thing. Well done! :-)

Thank You. We actually waited until after we paid because we didn't want our meal offered to us free or at a discount. We eat at this resteraunt quite often and the service is always good. We wanted to be able to go back without looking like freeloaders.

I didn't mean it that way. What I meant was because you were good customers and always returning and because of the way you handled the situation, the management might have made the gesture. It's a kind of recognition of a good customer. It wouldn't make you freeloaders at all. What you did was very commendable. I wonder how many others would have handled it the same way? Not many, I'll bet.

I didnt think you meant it that way. We get a free pitcher of sweet tea and get to pick our own seat when we go in now.
