uh... what they said. Especially honyemishi :'p . learn them basics.
And then try to give yourself projects to work on. Personal ones, and pretend as though you're making them for clients. That way you could create lots of materials for your portfolio.
Don't be afraid to work on small paying projects. It's great to work on big projects and high profile clients, but be sure that you can deliver what they deserve.
Always bring pencil/drawing pen and a drawing book with you. I used to bring one with me near the bed, for when I might need it at bedtime (Michael Turner of Image Comics said so :'p), but I've realized that it really messed up my rest time.
Delve into anything that would make you creative! And don't be embarrassed to have reference materials for anything that you work on.

Draw draw draw draw draw. Seriously. Practice drawing as much as you can. Even when you think you have mastered drawing a specific item, there's no reason to stop practicing.
My fiance just started school for graphic design, and he has been drawing daily, regardless of what his courses require. I have actually seen improvement in his work over the time I've known him, which is very neat! :)

hmm...learn the basics. typography, layout, image, color. but those can only get you so far--i think it all boils down to talent. :) good luck to you!
